UK EAPA supports Employers’ Initiative on Domestic Abuse

The Employers’ Initiative on Domestic Abuse is a network of more than 100 companies and public sector organisations that have come together to exchange information about best practice, and to encourage, promote and develop action to help staff who are enduring domestic abuse, or who are perpetrators.

The network builds on the work of the Vodafone Foundation’s TecSOS project, an initiative that seeks to support victims of domestic abuse and other vulnerable people through the provision of a specially adapted piece of technology that enables enhanced access to the police in an emergency.

Elizabeth Filkin CBE, trustee of the Vodafone Foundation, explains: “One in four women, and one in six men, will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, ranging from coercive control to murder. Any employer will have some people facing domestic abuse at some time, either as victims, witnesses, or perpetrators. Many employers find that domestic abuse reduces performance at work and increases absenteeism.

“When employers demonstrate that they are aware of domestic abuse, and make staff aware of the services that are available, this can help to reduce the wall of silence about domestic abuse that prevents many from seeking help. Many business leaders are already taking action to address this issue, for example, developing policies, raising awareness amongst employees, training senior staff, managers and ambassadors, sharing best practice with other employers, offering direct help to staff or signposting them to where it can be found.”

“UK EAPA is extremely pleased to be a part of the Network; our aims and values as an association are closely aligned to that of the network and we look forward to supporting their work in the future,” said Neil Mountford, UK EAPA Chair.
